An Offshore
Racing Icon...

Reborn.

The 1985 Gentry Turbo Eagle was originally built to compete in the demanding Miami to New York Endurance Race. In 1988, it achieved legendary status by winning the APBA Superboat Class World Championship, driven by none other than actor and racer Don Johnson, Bill Sirois (Throttles) and Gus Anastasi (Navigator). A decade later, in 1998, following the passing of its namesake and original owner Tom Gentry, the boat was purchased by two individuals who intended to convert it to a triple-diesel setup. However, the conversion was never completed, and the vessel ended up sitting in storage at a marina in Georgia for the next 18 years.

It was eventually sold to another owner who planned to restore it, but he soon realized the project was more than he had bargained for. In 2014, the Gentry Turbo Eagle was acquired by a businessman in Southern California, who enlisted Team Archer Marine to undertake a full restoration. The meticulous process spanned several years and cost over $1.3 million. In 2017, the fully restored boat returned to the water for the first time in more than two decades. A year later, in July 2018, Speedboat Magazine published a feature article titled “The Eagle Has Landed,” celebrating the boat’s dramatic comeback and honoring its rich legacy. Most recently, in February 2025, the original trailer was fully refreshed with new paint, air lines, and wiring, completing the restoration of this iconic offshore racing machine.

Provenance & History

The Gentry Turbo Eagle #99 is one of the most historically significant offshore powerboats ever built. Commissioned by Tom Gentry, the visionary racer and engineer known as “The Fastest Man in Offshore,” this boat was part of his relentless campaign to push the boundaries of speed, technology, and spectacle.

  • Tom Gentry’s Vision: Gentry revolutionized offshore racing with custom-built turbos, surface drives, and gearboxes that outpaced factory designs of the era. The Turbo Eagle carries his DNA as a true engineering testbed

  • Celebrity Connection: Raced with Don Johnson (Miami Vice) and Gus Anastasi, the boat became a symbol of the sport’s high-profile era — when Hollywood collided with high horsepower.

  • Competitive Era: The #99 Turbo Eagle competed in the Key West Offshore World Championships and other elite events, battling teams like Popeyes (Al Copeland/Chuck Norris) in what many regard as offshore racing’s golden age.

Engineering & Design

  • Hull: Long, sleek, narrow-beam design optimized for speed, stability, and wave-cutting in open water.

  • Construction: Lightweight composite build typical of the late-1980s offshore racing era — balancing rigidity with agility.

  • Power: Equipped with Gentry’s turbocharged high-output V8s, tuned for maximum horsepower and reliability at endurance-race speeds.

  • Drivetrain: Sterndrives by Kiekaefer now known
    as Mercury #6 Drives

  • Cockpit Layout: Three-man setup with pilot, throttleman, and navigator — essential for offshore racing precision.

  • Livery: Iconic #99 graphics with bold “GENTRY” branding, instantly recognizable to racing fans
    and collectors alike.

Cultural Significance

  • Tom Gentry Legacy: A pioneer who set multiple world speed records and redefined the sport’s engineering standards.

  • Hollywood Glamour: With Don Johnson aboard, the Turbo Eagle drew worldwide attention to offshore racing, symbolizing the merger of pop culture and motorsport.

  • Era-Defining: The 1980s–90s were offshore’s most exciting years, and this boat was at the very center of it all.

$1.3 Million Restoration

Unlike most surviving offshore racers, the Gentry Turbo Eagle #99 has already undergone a comprehensive, professional $1.3M restoration. Every detail was addressed — from mechanical systems and driveline integrity to cosmetic finish — ensuring the boat not only retains historical authenticity but is also ready for display or active use.

This level of restoration investment makes it a turn-key collector’s acquisition: no hidden costs, no uncertain projects — just a world-class piece of offshore racing history, preserved to modern standards.
